The Skift Megatrends 2026 report is a deep dive into where our industry is heading, and a lot of it resonated with the work we, at WITS Experiential, do every day as an experiential marketing agency.

We have summarized the page report down to the top 5 trends that matter most to our experiential marketing. We are breaking down what it means for us and how our experiential marketing services are already tackling these challenges.

1. Live Events are the Antidote to “AI Slop”

We are all feeling the fatigue of AI-generated content flooding our feeds, what Skift calls “AI Slop”. As the digital world gets filled with synthetic bots, people are craving authenticity more than ever. The Skift report highlights that you simply cannot fake a live event. Being physically present is now the ultimate proof of authenticity.

We couldn’t agree more! Technology is a tool, but it’s not a replacement for human connection. We are doubling down on experiential event production that prioritizes real, unfiltered human connection that AI simply can’t replicate. This is also why we emphasize authentic video production capturing real moments and real people as the only way to cut through the noise of AI-generated video and deepfakes.

2. Bigger Isn’t Always Better: The Return of Micro Events

The era of “bigger is better” is fading. Skift reports a shift toward “micro events”—smaller, intentionally curated gatherings (typically 10-100 people) that foster deeper trust and genuine engagement when the message needs to be more intimate and curated. Attendees are tired of being one face in a sea of thousands. They want meaningful dialogue.

We are seeing a move toward high-impact corporate networking events designed for senior leaders. We recommend tactics like Agora seating for sessions (you can’t hide or check email), lo-fi breakouts with old school flipcharts and post-its, and deep-dive discussion topics to move beyond “talking at” people to building genuine connections. Through precise experience strategy and design, we ensure the right format and style, facilitating the ability to build culture and secure the buy-in that cascades down to teams.

3. The Time Crunch is Real (and It’s Stressful)

If it feels like lead times are shrinking, you aren’t imagining it. The Skift report confirms that last-minute sourcing and decision-making are becoming the norm, often driven by budget and late C-Suite approvals. It’s creating a massive “scheduling puzzle” for everyone involved.

We know late decisions from the C-Suite can be disruptive, but reliable corporate event management is the solution. WITS specializes in managing leadership expectations through a proven process for governance. By establishing a steering committee and a clear roadmap to success early on, we help stabilize the “chaos” and keep your event management services on track, even when the timeline is tight.

4. The “Experience-First” Mindset

Skift notes that planners are moving away from being logistics managers to being “experience designers”. It’s no longer just about the convention center; it’s about treating the destination and the venue as part of the journey. Attendees want to feel connected to the local culture, not just sit in a windowless ballroom.

This is literally our middle name. We believe the “where” is just as important as the “what.” Whether we are designing brand activations or a leadership summit, we create immersive journeys that spark emotion. We intentionally design experiences that connect people to the message and to each other, inspiring business outcomes.

5. Bridging the Talent and Knowledge Gap

Here is a reality check from the report: there is a deepening talent gap in the events industry. Experienced pros are retiring, and while Gen Z values in-person networking, fewer of them are entering the event planning workforce. This “brain drain” means a loss of institutional knowledge that is threatening the quality of events.

When internal teams are stretched thin or lacking that deep institutional history, WITS steps in. We bring the senior-level expertise that many companies are currently missing. From strategic planning to seamless execution and everything in between, we leverage the right expertise and creativity to bring your vision to life, leveraging our full suite of services ensuring every event is impactful, engaging and delivers the desired results.

At the precipice of planning events for 2026 and beyond? The trends show that this year will be about authenticity, intimacy, and agility. If you need a partner who knows how to navigate these waters from experience strategy and design to experiential event production and strategic governance, we’d love to help.
